Ohh, we're nearly there

I think this site's pretty much ready to go live. There's probably a few things that don't quite work in Internet Explorer, and I've had to back off from using real XHTML 1.1 so it renders in IE at all, but it works in all the modern browsers I've tried.

I may do a release tonight just to get it up on the web; the IE users will just have to wait a bit until I've done the usual trawl through all the articles on how to hack my perfectly valid code to bits until it works with the Microsoft products.

Not that I'm bitter. Oh, no.

I'm about 80% of the way through rewriting this site from scratch using XML, .html, CSS, XSLT and the delightful Coda. Not because there's anything wrong with RapidWeaver, but because I wanted to learn more about coding web stuff. I've got most of it working pretty well. I'm working on the RSS feed at the moment, and the current plan is that this feed won't go away or become invalid. There may be the odd change in existing (not-so-permanent!) permalinks, but even all the old stuff should appear in the feed, so hopefully you won't even notice any changes...

The new version will probably be up next weekend.

Writing twenty 250-word articles has sensitised me to wasted words. Have trimmed down the Welcome page, the Apps page, and a few other things. None of the content's changed, it's just got shorter!

Added link to the fabulous "Tips from the Top Floor" on the Fave Podcasts page, and also trimmed the podcast descriptions (Krug's third law of usability: "Get rid of half the words on each page, then get rid of half of what's left.")

Dropped the Neat Little Mac Apps podcast, as it seems to be on semi-permanent hiatus.

As well as creating a completely new page for my favourite photographs, which links through to my Flickr photos page, I've added a Bruce Schneier quote to the quotes page, and popped The Long Now Foundation's podcast to my podcasting page. I'm also going to update the Fave Mac Apps page to add RapidFlickr, which I used to create the Flickr photos page in about ten seconds, three clicks and some typing.
